Types of Work
Teaching Assistants and Nursery Nurses
In nursery and primary schools most classes now have a teaching assistant or nursery nurse who works alongside the class teacher. Special needs schools have a particularly high demand for teaching assistants. Teaching assistants typically require a National Vocational Qualification or a first degree.
Learning Support Assistants
Secondary schools now rely heavily on learning support assistants to help deliver the curriculum. These range from laboratory and ICT technicians through to engineers, linguists and music specialists. Typical qualifications required are a first degree, ‘A’ level, vocational training or practical experience in a related industry or field.
Exam Invigilators
At certain times of the year (January and February for mock exams and May and June for the real thing) secondary schools require exam invigilators. Typical qualifications are reliability and common sense. TimePlan provides training in exam invigilation.
Secretarial, Administrative and Finance Staff
Schools always require secretarial, administrative and financial staff on either a temporary or permanent basis. Typical qualifications required are typing and secretarial skills, accounting or experience in administration.
Site and Midday Supervisors
Site supervisors are required for a variety of school building security and maintenance tasks. Midday supervisors are required to supervise pupils during lunch times.
